Inside the High-Stakes World of the Casino de Monte-Carlo’s Elite Croupiers

Award-winning croupier Noémie Serra works at Casino de Monte-Carlo.

As evening falls in Monaco, the prestigious Casino de Monte-Carlo takes centre stage. Award-winning croupier Noémie Serra reveals the secret behind upholding the venue’s stellar reputation.

In Monaco, days are defined by spectacle. The roar of engines at the Grand Prix, the energy of the coastline’s beach clubs and the constant movement of yachts through Port Hercule—each element draws the world’s eyes to the Principality. But as the sun sets, attention turns to a different stage: the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Set in the heart of Monte Carlo, the venue is more than a landmark; it is an experience—one shaped by ritual, atmosphere and an unwavering standard of service. And at the focal point of it all is one crucial professoinal figure: the croupier.

Noémie Serra, one of the casino’s leading croupiers—and one of the few women to reach the top of the profession—the role is both highly technical and deeply human. Having entered the Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer (SBM) dealer school in 2018—inspired by her father, who was a dealer at SBM for many years—she quickly found herself drawn to the verve and unpredictability of the room. “Every shift is different,” she says. “There is a life to this job that you don’t find anywhere else. The connection you build with players, even in just a few minutes at the table, is unique.”

Serra’s expertise has since been recognised at the highest level. In 2024, she was crowned European Dealer Champion, beating 37 professionals from 21 countries and securing the first overall win for the Casino de Monte-Carlo. “It was overwhelming, in the most beautiful sense,” she says. “It wasn’t just a personal victory; it felt like a recognition of what SBM stands for, the level of training and professionalism they invest in us.”

Yet beyond her technical talent, it is her presence at the table that sets Serra apart. “Technical mastery gives you the foundation, but once that becomes second nature, your focus shifts entirely to the people in front of you,” she says. She describes the role as a performance: “It’s about making each guest feel that they are at the centre of the game. You must be precise and also be present, warm and attuned.”

Reading a room, managing its energy and maintaining composure under pressure, in other words, are all part of the craft. The setting plays a supporting role. The striking architecture, the history, the sense of occasion, the strict no-photography rule, the free-flowing Champagne—each contributes to the experience, in turn attracting a wellheeled international crowd. Here, gaming becomes part of Monaco’s wider theatre.

This provenance comes with responsibility. “There is something in knowing that you are part of a legacy that goes back over a century and a half,” Serra explains. “Our guests often come with very high expectations, and meeting those expectations—being impeccable in every detail—becomes a source of pride rather than pressure. The glamour is real, but so is the rigour behind it.” Discipline, concentration and an acute attention to detail are, she says, all fundamental to the task in hand.

In a city built around its events, the Casino de Monte-Carlo remains one place not to miss. Not simply for what happens on the tables, but for the atmosphere that unfolds around them. It’s here that the night, in Monaco, truly begins.
