99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant Opens in Monaco—Here’s a Look Inside

The famed sushi haunt has finally opened its doors in the Principality, bringing its haute Japanese cuisine to the people of Monaco.

The actress Mae West once remarked that “too much of a good thing can be wonderful.” It’s a saying that would resonate with the Riviera’s Japanese cuisine aficionados, who may already be spoiled for choice in terms of dining options, but will be tapping their chopsticks in anticipation of another stellar addition to the Principality’s food scene.

Ever since 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant opened its first outpost in Spain in 2005, it has garnered legions of haute cuisine fans who have made it their first port of call for inventive Japanese dishes crafted from the finest of ingredients. Having enjoyed the same success in Dubai, Abu Dhabi (where it has a Michelin star) and Rabat, it’s no surprise that its latest restaurant has opened right in the heart of Monaco—at Le Petit Portier in the Mareterra development, to be exact.

Joining the likes of Nobu, Amazónico, Cipriani and Gaia as neighbours, 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant is primarily known for its creative use of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), with akami, toro and other variations elevated by precise cuts and masterful seasoning. What’s more, its chefs are committed to working with the fish in an environmentally responsible manner to ensure the species remains preserved, sourcing exclusively from the Balfegó family —who are officially accredited by the United Nations and FAO.

Diners can also enjoy sashimi, world-class wagyu and other signature dishes that combine caviar, foie gras, uni and truffle in an explosion of flavours. Highlights include Alaskan king crab gunkan; lobster maki with sake; wakame seaweed, cucumber and yuzu; and roast suckling pig toban jan.

Befitting an eatery of its stature, 99 Sushi Bar & Restaurant respects Japanese traditions through its design, with extensive use of glass covering the main mural, sushi counter and floor of the restaurant, giving the impression of walking into a cave, while a stylish bar and lounge takes centre stage and runs across the entire venue. And as the brand’s first waterfront address—making yacht drop-off easy—the venue will always be a lively affair. We wouldn’t expect anything less.
