With beautifully reimagined interiors, private gardens and all the pleasures of a five-star country estate, Coworth Park’s redesigned cottages offer an enticing new reason to visit.
There is something particularly appealing about a hotel suite that comes with its own front door. At Coworth Park, the Dorchester Collection‘s magnificent Berkshire estate, the recently redesigned Farmer’s Cottage Suite offers the independence of a country home alongside the comforts of a five-star hotel. There is a private garden for enjoying the fresh air, a fireplace for colder evenings and views over the estate’s polo fields. The main hotel, with its Michelin-starred restaurant and award-winning spa, is only a short buggy ride away.
The estate’s cottages feel like a world of their own. Set in charming brick buildings with black-painted front doors, they house nine rooms and suites, each offering a welcome sense of seclusion away from the main house. They are part of an extensive renovation unveiled in June, which saw celebrated British designer Martin Hulbert and his team transform Coworth Park’s stable rooms, suites and cottages. Having originally designed the hotel when it opened in 2010, Hulbert returned to reimagine the interiors, taking inspiration from the surrounding landscape and the estate’s equestrian heritage

Among the most significant additions are private terraces and newly landscaped gardens, giving the accommodation a greater sense of independence. Inside, a palette inspired by the changing seasons is complemented by natural materials and artisanal details. Hand-drawn designs inspired by British wildflowers have been block-printed onto Irish linen, while leather upholstery references the property’s equestrian heritage. Particularly charming are the bespoke resin tables preserving dried flowers gathered from Coworth Park’s own meadows.
Our Farmer’s Cottage Suite was a beautiful example of the transformation. Spread across 89 sq m, the duplex suite featured a generous living and dining area with a working fireplace, while floral wallpaper and glass-topped resin tables filled with autumnal flowers and leaves gave the space a distinctly English country-house feel. Upstairs, the spacious bedroom was accompanied by a separate dressing room with a vanity table, while a freestanding copper roll-top bath offered an inviting spot for a long soak. Beyond the windows, the grounds stretched towards the polo fields, while the private garden offered a secluded place to enjoy the countryside.

Smaller touches made the suite feel even more welcoming. On arrival, we were greeted with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne, fresh fruit, shortbread and a chocolate shaped like a horse’s head: a nod to Coworth Park’s equestrian heritage. The small kitchen was stocked with a generous selection of complimentary treats, from a cupboard filled with sweet and savoury snacks to a minibar with soft drinks and milk, alongside tea and coffee-making facilities.
The greatest appeal, however, lay in the freedom of having a private residence within the estate. Guests can come and go independently, with the hotel’s buggy service available on demand to take them between the cottages and the main facilities. It is a particularly appealing balance of privacy and five-star hospitality, with Coworth Park’s attentive team never more than a phone call away.

There is plenty of incentive to venture beyond the cottage. Set within 240 acres of Berkshire parkland, Coworth Park has beautiful formal gardens and expansive grounds, which can be explored on foot or using complimentary bicycles provided on request. An afternoon can easily be spend exploring the estate’s woodland paths, with sweeping views across the surrounding countryside.
The spa is another compelling reason to visit. Its striking indoor swimming pool, set almost flush with the surrounding floor, is lined with sparkling amethyst crystals, while underwater speakers play classical music beneath the surface. Treatments are equally impressive, including the ishga Personalised Wellbeing Massage, which begins with the selection of an aromatic body oil. I chose the ‘warming’ blend for a comforting treatment that combined Swedish massage with marma techniques and lymphatic drainage, designed to ease tension and restore a sense of wellbeing.

Dining is another of Coworth Park’s great strengths. The Michelin-starred Woven by Adam Smith occupies a beautiful series of spaces within the main house, with interiors inspired by the changing seasons. We dined in the autumn-themed restaurant, where rich, warm tones created an atmospheric setting for Smith’s inventive interpretation of British cuisine.
The tasting menu showcased exceptional seasonal ingredients, with dishes such as Dorset crab with Thai green flavours, grouse ‘pie’ with elderberry and beetroot and turbot ‘Jubilee’ with native lobster. There was a playful sense of nostalgia throughout, reflecting Smith’s affection for traditional British cooking and the family recipes of his childhood. Even the menu itself offered a glimpse into the chef’s personal history, with reflections on everything from Cornish fishing harbours to his grandmother’s puddings. And the food kept coming, with amuse-bouches and mignardises bookending an indulgent feast.
For something more traditional, afternoon tea in the elegant Drawing Room is a highlight. During our visit, the seasonal Orchard Afternoon Tea celebrated British produce through inventive sandwiches, freshly baked scones and delicate pastries, including an orchard plum tart with estate honey and mascarpone.

Breakfast at Woven was another treat, with an abundant spread of fresh pastries, homemade granola and honey served straight from the honeycomb. An extensive à la carte menu went well beyond the traditional full English. Among the newer additions was the indulgent loaded cruffin, filled with a sausage patty, crispy bacon, fried egg, cheddar and pecan nut ketchup.
Across the estate, service was exemplary. From the warm welcome and valet parking on arrival to the attentive staff throughout the restaurants and spa, everything was handled with a natural warmth and professionalism that made us feel genuinely looked after.
Coworth Park has long been one of England’s finest country house hotels, but its redesigned cottages introduce a particularly appealing way to experience it. With the freedom and intimacy of a country home, and all the pleasures of a five-star hotel just moments away, they offer the best of both worlds.
