Robb Recommends: Brett Johnson’s Riviera-Inspired Suede Field Jacket

Stylish mid-season layering just got easier.

By the age of just seven, he was customising his own Nike sneakers; by 11, he was imploring his father to take him from their home city of Washington D.C. up to New York City for him to explore the endless fabrics of that city’s garment district. So few in his family were surprised when Brett Johnson, aged just 24, founded his own fashion company.

“Casual and sophisticated” is how Johnson describes his stylistic yen today, so it’s little surprise that The Riviera, during a recent trip here, captured his imagination – and became the inspiration for a Spring-Summer 2024 collection which includes this field jacket. Made fromsuede whose light texture and soft, tactile touch call to mind cashmere, it also offers a comfortable silhouette and a fluid, tailored cut.

As is always the case with Johnson’s apparel – which includes everything from softly tailored suits to cashmere loungewear – attention to detail is unparalleled (check out, on this piece, the hand-sewn the tone-on-tone stitching, the buttons made of real horn and an internal drawstring which guarantees a more contoured fit to the wearer).

Meanwhile four front patch pockets, as well as offering more structure to the garment itself, enhance the overall aesthetic with their suede-covered snap buttons.

“I was fascinated by the French Riviera and its distinctive atmosphere of freedom and casual chic elegance during a recent holiday with my wife Sarah,” says Johnson of the decision to evoke the Riviera’s breezy, debonair je ne sais quoi with his latest collection. “The colour palette used reflects the Mediterranean landscapes and their natural beauty: from the French lover of the knitwear to the ocher of the field jacket.”
