The sprawling waterfront property in Naples, known as Gordon Pointe, was just listed for a stratospheric $295 million, and if the palatial spread manages to meet its sky-high asking price or come anywhere near it, the deal will go down as one of the country’s costliest residential transactions, The Wall Street Journal first reported. To put the price in some perspective, the current record is held by billionaire Ken Griffin, who famously splashed out a staggering $238 million for a New York City penthouse back in 2019, while the now second-most expensive home currently on the U.S. market is Casa Encantada in Los Angeles, which is listed for $195 million.

According to the newspaper, financier John Donahue and his wife, Rhodora, paid $1 million for a roughly 4.3-acre undeveloped parcel back in 1985. Over the years, the couple kept buying up land and ultimately ended up with close to 60 acres in Naples’s gated Port Royal community. Now, the late couple’s 13 children and 84 grandchildren are parting ways with a portion of the family’s prized compound, which includes three residences, a 231-foot yacht basin, and a private dock with room to park up to six boats.

“We’ve all enjoyed it, but it’s more or less time to move on,” John and Rhodora’s son, Bill Donahue, told the WSJ. Brought to market by Coldwell Banker Realty’s Dawn McKenna Group, in partnership with The Leighton Candler Team of Corcoran and Savills’ Rory McMullen, the Donahue’s compound began with an 11,500-square-foot main mansion. The spacious home comprises six bedrooms and a screened-in swimming pool. In 1990, the family added a 5,500-square-foot second home, which features five bedrooms and an outdoor pool. A third abode measuring about 5,800 square feet was erected over two decades later, in 2013.

Since the ‘80s, the Donahues have hosted a slew of notable guests at their coastal oasis, including former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush. “We nicknamed the room they stayed in the Presidential Suite,” Bill told the news outlet.

The compound occupies a private peninsula with over 700 feet of beachfrontage and another 950 feet on Naples Bay. According to the brokers, the compound can be renovated and maintained as is, possibly subdivided, or further built upon.
