The story of how an ambitious luxury interiors company earned the Monaco royal family’s seal of approval—and then conquered the design world.
Like the lovely walks along the Côte d’Azur, a stroll down the Boulevard des Moulins is, without a doubt, one of Monaco’s greatest pleasures. The beauty of the buildings and their opulent facades is complemented by the finesse of the avenue’s luxurious storefronts. For over 50 years, one house has contributed its fair share to maintaining this level of elegance: Maison Moghadam.
The house’s story began in 1962 when Alexander Moghadam, already an expert in his field, showcased a collection of Persian carpets in a gallery space at number 23 on the iconic boulevard. After becoming the official supplier to the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, Alexander developed a loyal following of elite clients, including collectors, celebrities and royalty.
The “enfant terrible” of decoration
In 2010, Alexander’s eldest son Kamyar joined the business after studying fashion at the Parsons School of Design and gaining experience at large luxury houses. Just as Basquiat and Gaultier influenced art and fashion respectively, Kamyar made an impression in the design world and became known as the enfant terrible of decoration. Often described as a visionary, Kamyar’s style veers towards the bold, and he is not afraid of using daring colours, patterns and materials. This intrepidness extends to his business modus operandi.
One of Kamyar’s burning ideas was to open a small boutique on Monaco’s prestigious strip and create an original brand—and so Fashion For Floors was born. From the start the tone was set, as Kamyar brought together the largest collection of contemporary rugs in Europe in a single location, with nearly 3,000 rug references. These included original designs in noble materials like wool, silk and bamboo silk, masterpieces which remain the hallmark of the house to this day.
For over 10 years, Fashion For Floors has displayed its wares in a magnificent threestorey mansion at 39 Boulevard des Moulins. Clients can commission either bespoke pieces, haute-couture-style tailor-made items, or browse ready-to-wear collections that are available to take home immediately. Every year, Kamyar also designs unique creations to exhibit in his showroom. All rugs and carpets are crafted at the brand’s own factories in Nepal and, as an added boon, can be installed in the client’s home by the maison’s specialist floor designers.
Beyond rugs
As Maison Moghadam became increasingly popular, consumer desire for more homewares followed. As such, the team decided to create the Fashion For Homes department, presenting clients with more than 16,000 fabric references for upholstery, curtains and wall drapes; nearly 12,000 wallpaper references with original patterns and delicate textures; and a dedicated office for interior design and furnishing projects. It also created a sewing workshop where skilled seamstresses could create custom cushions, drapes and curtains, ensuring precise craftsmanship and short turnaround times.
The magic of light also found its way to the maison; in 2022, Kamyar introduced Marbellous, a home decor brand that specialises in creating exquisite lamps using the world’s finest onyx from Puebla, Mexico. Marbellous also offers a line of exclusive products, including statues, tableware and small furniture. It also works in collaboration with designers and architects to create custom pieces that blend elegance and sophistication.
King of collaboration
Collaboration is a key fundamental of the maison, which has worked with many of the greatest names in the world of design. The most recent is esteemed Dutch house Eichholtz, which has produced timeless collections of furniture and decorative objects for 30 years. In 2023, Eichholtz joined forces with Kamyar to open its first store in southern Europe at the former Moghadam gallery at 23 Boulevard des Moulins.
Catering to both professional and private clients, Eichholtz by Moghadam offers a “360° solution” to furnish and decorate interiors instantly. Across two floors, the showroom presents a display of original and contemporary Eichholtz furniture, lighting and accessories, for both indoor and outdoor spaces. It offers accessible prices thanks to its substantial in-stock collection of recurring pieces complemented by seasonal highlights.
With a seemingly endless ability to reinvent itself, Maison Moghadam today offers the most refined selection of interior design and decor in Monaco, with one overarching motto: elegance in craftsmanship and style.
